Preparing Your Music List

It’s time to start thinking about your music selections for your big day!

Your wedding day is going to be one of the most memorable days of your life. You are celebrating not only your love for your partner, but the love for family & friends, with whom you have asked to share the big day with you.

When sitting down to work out the type of music you would like played at your reception, it is always very important to remember that the music is there to keep both you and your guests entertained… after all, it is a party!

I have seen hundreds & hundreds of lists, from hundreds & hundreds of weddings, and believe me when I say, that no two lists are ever exactly the same. Yes, there are some songs that make it onto a lot of wedding lists… what some people refer to as “cheesy wedding songs”…but in our experience, most of them work in getting people on the dance floor!

It all comes down to the DJ being able to read a crowd. Our DJs have years of experience in reading crowds, and sometimes if your DJ feels like something won’t work, then they wont play it, even if it IS a classic wedding song…. Other times however, they will play a song, and the DJ knows it will work before they even hit play. This is because all our DJs have years of experience in reading crowds, and getting people to dance.

To help you in what some bride & grooms see as a daunting task, we have put together a small list of ideas, for some of the important parts of the evening, in the hope that it helps you create your own list, with ease.

Whilst we provide you with the option of choosing some dancing music, if you choose to leave those section blank, it means that our DJs can play music that will work best with your crowd on the night.

Music to avoid…

Try to avoid a lot of Heavy Rock, Metal, Gangsta Rap, anything with obvious swearing, or anything in general that’s going to make parents sit down, or grandma’s blush…. After all, wouldn’t you prefer they were up dancing with you?

We went through a big stage of a lot of couples requesting Thrift Shop (by Macklemore & Ryan Lewis), without realising how much swearing was in the song. If we think a song may be inappropriate, we will let you know, as it will ultimately be your decision if it is played.

Some couples are also really into Indie or slightly obscure music, which is great, and we love it too…. but will the majority of your guests share your passion? It’s unfortunate in this day and age, that if a guest is unfamiliar with a song, they will generally go and sit back down until a song they are familiar with is played.

Keep the list simple, and short, and leave plenty of room on the night for requests, and more importantly, leave room so the DJ can read the crowd, and choose songs appropriately!

We hope this helps, and are looking forward to your big day.
